Way to Green IT – Technology
Practical implementation of sustainable software development
While our Management course explains the “why” and the models, this course dives deep into the “how”. Participants learn how Green IT is put into practice in code and infrastructure. We present concrete patterns that illustrate the application of Green IT in everyday work.
Course Objective
We enable technical teams not only to understand the ecological impact of their IT systems, but to actively minimise it. The focus is on a favourable cost-benefit ratio: we show which measurements are needed to take the right actions.By the end of the day, participants will be able to:
- Apply the 7 principles of Green IT to architecture, frontend, backend, and infrastructure.
- Name and measure the impact of IT on the environment.
- Practically implement concepts such as hardware efficiency, demand shifting, and carbon awareness.
Target Audience
- Software Architects
- Software Developers
- DevOps Engineers
You should have a solid understanding of programming fundamentals and experience with open-source technologies.
Course Content
What can you expect from the course?
We build on 7 universal principles (e.g. "Less is more", "Manage demand", "Minimise compute power") and apply them to every layer of a modern tech stack:- Architecture & Design:
- Switchable architectures and scope reduction.
- Extending the lifetime of devices & software through backwards compatibility.
- Frontend:
- Adhering to page-weight budgets.
- Optimising image formats and caching strategies.
- Backend & Databases:
- Peak shaving and right-sizing of services.
- Choosing energy-efficient data structures and DB engines.
- Cloud & Operations (Infrastructure):
- Hardware selection: AMD vs. Intel vs. ARM.
- Using spot instances and scale-to-zero strategies.
- Location optimisation based on carbon intensity (energy mix).
- AI & New Technologies:
- Choosing the right technology and using smaller models.
Course Structure
Duration: 1 day
We don't just work theoretically. Using a continuous full-stack example ("EcoTasker") with open-source technologies, we practise the various patterns and apply them directly.
- Analysis: We examine an existing application (e.g. VMs running 24/7) for violations of Green IT principles.
- Optimisation: We carry out a "lift & shift" to containers, optimise cron jobs for "green" time windows, and choose better cloud regions.
- Measurement: We use tools such as Scaphandre, Kepler, or the Green Metrics Tool to verify success using the SCI value (Software Carbon Intensity).
